United Way to focus funds on community’s most needed areas

FRONT ROYAL – United Way of Front Royal-Warren County discussed its year of transition and future changes at its annual meeting Monday afternoon.

Executive Director Dawn Graves said the agency is focusing its attention on the most pressing issues impacting the Front Royal and Warren County area.

“Community is our focus,” she said.

The donated funds help to alleviate problems within the community dealing with basic needs, financial stability, education and health. She said they were able to raise about $140,000 last year through workplace campaigns and individual donations.

The group’s vision for the future, she said, includes looking into creating an advisory council to review and discuss the needs of the community to focus funds into the most needed areas in order to treat root problems in the area, not just symptoms.

“We’re getting more hands-on with our community,” she said.

The organization is also asking member agencies to show how they are making a difference in the community and addressing the needs of the community, she added, and how the United Way helps them achieve their goals.

She added that the United Way of Front Royal-Warren County is also seeking volunteers to serve on its Board of Directors.

Challenges affecting the organization, she said, are the donors themselves who don’t know there is a United Way in Warren County and donors who donate directly to their organization of choice, bypassing the United Way.

Graves said she wants to get the word out to more people about the work United Way does for the community and welcome more volunteers.

The organization works with 11 member agencies that provide services to the region: Blue Ridge Housing Network, Blue Ridge Legal Services, Blue Ridge Opportunities, Concern Hotline, Front Royal Women’s Resource Center, Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital, Healthy Families of Warren County, House of Hope, Mental Health America-Warren County, the Phoenix Project and St. Luke Community Clinic.
