Pet of the Week: Happy Veronica seeks a family to play with

WINCHESTER — Veronica, a 6-year-old American pit bull terrier, wouldn’t sit still in the visiting room at the Winchester SPCA until she was petted.

She ran around in circles with a purple tugging toy in her mouth wanting to play any game she could, wagging her tail and walking back and forth as she showed off the toy she had found.

Veronica came to the Winchester SPCA in January as a stray, and has been excited to greet any visitor since.

She has a few issues with her legs: her bowed front-legs are a birth defect, and she has a problem with one of her hind legs from a torn ACL that never healed properly while she was a stray.

None of that, however, has affected her friendly disposition.

“She’s one of the happiest dogs I have ever seen in my life,” said Sandy Dennis, office supervisor at the Winchester SPCA.  “‘She just wags her tail and then when you go to pet her she’ll just sit down, but she just sits down funny and everything.”

Dennis also said that Veronica would make a great addition to any family. They are not sure about her behavior while interacting with other pets, but she has never shown any type of aggressive behavior to any of the other dogs that walk by her kennel or to any of the people who come to visit her.

The fee to adopt Veronica is $75, and she has been spayed, micro-chipped, and is up to date on all of her vaccinations. She is not in any pain because of the issues she has with her legs, but the veterinarian recommended that she not gain any more weight, Dennis said.
