Point out the right

Barbee_RogerW_5_12.jpg Over the Thanksgiving holiday, while visiting my mother, she and I took a Friday afternoon ride. On a whim, I decided to go by the home of Steve and Jenny. Many years had passed since I had seen them; it had been so long in fact, that I made one wrong turn in driving to a home where I had spent many hours. However, I managed to pull into the correct driveway and saw Jenny setting up Christmas lights. comments

Just a word, until...

Barbee_RogerW_5_12.jpg It is like so many words we often use, and it has, it seems, become commonplace in our modern lives. We use it, but do we know it? It is a word that I knew of, one that I had to look up for its correct spelling, and one that I knew as a possibility for us all. Like so many of us, I used it, but this week it became more than a medical condition, it became personal. comments

It seems greed has replaced 'giving'

Barbee_RogerW_5_12.jpg Last week my wife told me of how a national box store was planning to begin Black Friday at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day night. It seems by deeming that earlier is better, the CEO of this large retailer has tossed the order of our days, thus Friday is no longer Friday, but Thursday. All of this because someone somewhere in an office has realized that shoppers will forsake a secular, but important holiday in my eyes, in order to "get a deal" on some gadget. Thus, the Christmas season begins. comments

Show charity in thought, deed

Barbee_RogerW_5_12.jpg This morning I went online to read the Daily, something that I seldom do because I enjoy the old way of holding what I am reading in my hand. However, this week I wanted to read the news as several people I know do -- on the computer screen. comments

'The Song Remembers When'

Barbee_RogerW_5_12.jpg Today's high school athletic teams travel to away games, meets, or tournaments just as they did when I was on a high school team - on a yellow school bus and just as then, the coach or coaches sit in the front and the seats in the back are sacred seats where the team captain(s) lead the team in preparation for the coming athletic contest. This preparation by today's athletes is similar to what has been done for many years, but different, too. Today, the athletes use music, as did we, but in a different way. comments

Watching storm blow in provides enough information

Barbee_RogerW_5_12.jpg As these words are being written, it is Monday afternoon, Oct. 29. Off to my left, Powell Mountain is shrouded in a bank of cloud, and North Mountain, way over to the west, sits lost in the heavy mist. Tired of the verbiage on the airwaves, I came to the front bay window to see for myself. Aunt Sookie, the full-figured cat, came too. comments

A valley morning

Barbee_RogerW_5_12.jpg We have a bay window in our family room that faces northeast across our back. In it is an old oak table I found covered with lawn mower parts in the mid 1990s and over a summer I brought it back to use. That table has held many cups of coffee and heard much conversation with or without a meal. comments
