Former Maurertown resident becomes president of Richmond Bar Association

Anne Gaines Scher has become The Richmond Bar Association’s 129th president. She took office on June 1, according to the association’s June newsletter.

Scher was valedictorian of her graduating class at Central High School in 1982.

Scher has served on several Bar committees, including the Executive Committee, Personnel Committee and Judiciary Committee.

She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1986 and her law degree from UVA in 1992. She served as a law clerk for the judges of the Circuit Court of Henrico County before joining the law firm Wright, Robinson, Osthimer & Tatum as an associate in 1993. In 1996, she joined the medical malpractice defense team at the law firm of LeClair Ryan, and in 2004 she left the practice to become director of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Department of Professional Liability. She manages the malpractice self-insurance programs and MCV physicians.

Scher is the daughter of Jack and Nancy Gaines of Maurertown and is married to Charles B. Scher, an attorney and senior counsel with Dominion Resources Services Inc. The couple live in Richmond with their two children.
