New Market library, town team for summer reading program

The New Market Area Library and the Town of New Market teamed up for the kick off of the summer reading program. The summer program is called “Dig Into Reading” and each week features a different topic. The kick off was called “I Dig Big Machines” and children could look at the various big machines brought by the town, enjoy snacks related to digging (popcorn dug out of a tub with a plastic shovel and put in a sand pail and “dirt” pudding), listen to stories read by Joanne Thompson, and color pictures of big machines.

Children also received a passport to get stamped each week.

At 10 a.m. Aug. 8, a celebration will be held at Endless Caverns for all children participating in the summer reading program. Children who read books and complete their reading logs will receive prizes.

A middle/high school summer reading program also will take place at the library, with prizes including book store gift cards and a chance to win an electronic tablet. Middle/high school students who participate in the summer reading program may also attend the Aug. 8 celebration.
