Peter Muhlenburg school reading garden grows from grant
Peter Muhlenberg Middle School in Woodstock has announced that on Oct. 24 community members and school staff celebrated the unveiling and dedication of a new reading garden at the school. The Patriot Reading Garden, made possible by a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant and community donations, was designed and constructed as an Eagle Scout Project by John Paul Schechtel, a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 575.
Schechtel, a senior at Central High School in Woodstock, spent over 900 hours planning and implementing the garden’s construction.
Besides creating a new area for students on the Central campus to enjoy reading in the natural setting adjacent to the school, the project allowed the school the opportunity to partner with the Shenandoah County Library and Woodstock Rotary with a subsequent grant that lead to the purchase of more young adult literature in e-book format for checkout from the Shenandoah County Library System.
The school also held a library card drive in conjunction with the two organizations to encourage Peter Muhlenberg students to obtain library cards, allowing them access to the entirety of the library’s electronic collection.
Woodstock Rotary member Kevin Gutshall attended the dedication to extend greetings on behalf of the organization.
