Peter Muhlenberg art teacher earns award from state
Peter Muhlenberg Middle School has announced that Karen Girouard, a veteran art teacher, was recently told she has received the Virginia Art Education Association Blue Ridge Region Middle School Division Art Educator Award for the 2013-2014 school year.
In her nomination letter, Principal Gina Stetter wrote that Girouard’s creativity is most impressive. Even though she teaches art to sixth, seventh and eighth graders, two sections per day of each grade level in both semester- and year-long classes, she doesn’t cycle through the same projects year after year. As a result, Stetter wrote, the school is more beautiful from art displayed on ceiling tiles, in murals, framed on our hallway walls and in display cases.
Each student learns the basics of color, line and texture during introductory classes, and with the advent of the new Teacher Evaluation System implemented state-wide, Girouard has demonstrated division-level leadership within the Shenandoah County Public Schools Art Department. She has developed and shared with her colleagues ways to assess student growth in art classes which meets the requirements of the new evaluation tool, Stetter wrote.
Girouard is a professional who continues to grow and develop and models for her students the philosophy of being a life-long learner.
