Lucas DuMez, Maeve Dale named WCDS athletes of the month
Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly has announced Lucas DuMez and Maeve Dale December athletes of the month.
Lucas DuMez of Front Royal, a varsity swim team member, is the male athlete of the month. In December he earned two VISAA State qualifying times in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke. He finished in first place at the Fredericksburg Academy Meet in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, just missing state qualifying times in those swims. Lucas also anchored the 400 freestyle relay to a first place finish in the same meet. On Dec. 14, he swam to a first place finish in the 100 butterfly and a second place finish in the 100 backstroke, breaking a WCDS Swimming team record in the process. He also was a huge part of the relay swims at both meets.
The female athlete of the month was Maeve Dale of Luray, for varsity girls basketball, after leading her team to an undefeated, 4-0, record to begin the season. She has been the leading scorer in all but one game with a 17 point average and has averaged 9.5 rebounds a game. She had four double-doubles and scored a season high 24 points in the team’s 39-21 over Fresta Valley Christian School to open the season on Dec. 3. Dale reached a career milestone and set a school record by scoring her 1,000th career varsity point in the second quarter of a Dec. 13 Delaney Athletic Conference victory over Emmanuel Christina School at WCDS. The junior became the first girl in school history to reach the 1,000th point plateau and joins her brother, Pat Dale, and former Owls Andrew Smith and Brian Shafran in the 1,000th point club.
