Apple Blossom Festival announces fire, rescue awards
The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival has announced the winners of the Firefighter’s Parade awards.
Jeff Unger of the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Department, won first place in the V.F.I.S. Insurance Fire Truck Rodeo. Winning second was Justin Laidler of Manassas Fire Department and third was Adam Funkhouser of Winchester Fire and Rescue.
Millwood Station won Best in Parade EMS Equipment and Best in Parade Firefighting Equipment for Frederick County.
The first place EMS award for Basic Life Support went to Strasburg, with second going to Valley Medical Transport and third to Great Falls.
In the category of Advanced Life Support, Luray won first, Valley Medical Transport won second and Purcellville won third.
Luray also won first of EMS Special Units, for its 2013 Dodge truck, and Strasburg won second for its 2010 Ford Explorer.
Lake Jackson won first in Brush Apparatus and Capon Springs won second.
Back Creek Valley won first place for Tanker/Pumper, Capon Springs won second and Shenandoah Shores won third.
Blue Ridge Mountain won first place for its Elliptical Tanker and Mechanicsvile won first for First Department Heavy Rescue.
Other first place winners were Glascow for Custom Rescue Engine and Aerial Device greater than 75 feet, Capon Springs for Commercial Rescue Engine, Bakerton for Aerial Device of less than 75 feet and Sperryville for its Commercial Pumper.
In the category of Custom Pumper, Luray won first, Woodstock second and Halfway third.
Glascow won the Fire Department Special Unit award for Swift Water Rescue and Mount Weather won second for its Hazmat Unit.
Overall awards were also awarded. Best in Parade EMS Equipment went to Luray for its 2013 Ford F-450 with Horton Body. Best in Parade Firefighting Equipment went to Glascow for its 2013 Pierce Rescue Engine. Huguenot in Powhatan County won the Fire and/or Rescue Traveling Farthest award for its 158-mile drive to Winchester for Friday night’s parade, and Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department won the Over All Judges Award.
