Area McDonald’s Educates Scholarship winners announced
Area students Guadalupe Reynoso and Joshua Stickles of Shenandoah County and Allison Shifflett and William Spears of Winchester have been announced 2014 McDonald’s Educates Scholarship recipients at an an awards banquet on May 12 in Hagerstown, Maryland.
To date, the McDonald’s Educates Scholarship Program has donated more than $800,000 to local students.
This year’s scholarship recipients hail from the following counties: Washington, Fauquier, Page, Berkeley, Hardy, Morgan, Shenandoah, Hampshire and Frederick.
More than 500 applications were received and reviewed by a panel of judges that included Greater Washington, D.C. McDonald’s Owners and Operators. Winning students demonstrated dedication to volunteerism, leadership, academic excellence and character. Requirements for applicants included a completed application, a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor or community service leader and two short essays.
The scholarship recipients were awarded scholarships in amounts of $5,000 or $1,500, which will go directly to the college or university the student plans to attend.
