R-MA German students earn national honors

Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal has announced its students attained national recognition for excellent performances on the 2014 National German Examinations.

They earned seven gold medals, three silver medals, three bronze medals and 13 honorable mentions. According to the American Association of Teachers of German, which sponsors the exam, more than 20,000 students participated in the German National Exams this year.

Stephen Latham is the German instructor at Randolph-Macon, and students at the school have a long history of high achievement on the exams.

The following students earned gold medals:
Eighth grader Katia Berger in level one German
Level one sophomores Ashley Grossman, XinYu Hou and Albert Chandler Lee
Sophomore Meghan Melberg in level three German
Juniors Natalie Pendie in level two and Paige Hollis in level three

The following students earned silver medals:
Sophomore Jake Branham in level three German
Juniors Rebel Hafner and Shelby Sebring in level three German

The following students earned bronze medals:
Junior Khanh Pham in level one German
Freshman Dennis Ponn in level three and junior Jonathan Pederson in level four

The following level one German students earned honorable mentions:
Eighth graders Sarah Vaughan and Dylan Glascock; freshmen Sean Bell and Evan Kelly; sophomores Elias Lisle, Joseph Monastero and George David Pitts.

Also earning honorable mentions were junior Douglas Brennand and senior Sabrina Ford, both level two students; junior Jacob Dodson and seniors Siqi Xie and Ryan Zech, all level three students; and senior Savannah Rhodes, a level four student.
