O’Mealey family holds reunion

Descendants of the Michael Martin O’Mealey (Maley) family gathered for a family reunion celebrating eight generations of the “Kinship of Michael Martin O’Mealey.”

The O’Mealey family immigrated to Virginia from Ireland in 1848 and settled in Fairfax County. They became landowners and continue to this date to reside in this area. Michael Martin married Jane Ann Simpson and they had three children. One son, John Edward Maley and his wife Mary Christiana Beach (nee) Maley, and his second wife, Margaret Fairfax Maley are the ancestors who enabled the lineage of all the family members attending the reunion.

Family members from County Mayo, Ireland to Leesylvania State Park, Virginia, attended the reunion, which was hosted at Leesylvania State Park by United States Air Force Retired Major Roger Kemp and his wife Ruth (Maley) Kemp of Greenville, North Carolina, on June 28. There were 78 “Maley” relatives attending. The oldest in attendance was Virginia Fairfax Maley Dillon, 89, of Culpeper. Bernice Maley Wilson of Fairfax Station, 85, attended along with Thelma Faulk Maley, 85, of Arlington. The youngest was Chelsea Lynn Thorpe, age 22 months, of Front Royal. Traveling the farthest to attend the reunion was Michelle Dansie of Taylorville, Utah.

Edward Long Jr., county executive of Fairfax County and a Maley family member, welcomed the family members to the reunion. Music was provided by Richard “Dick” Maley of Lakeland, Florida.
