Shentel gives award to local student

Phillip Stauffer, a recent graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School in Mount Jackson, recently was selected to represent Shentel as a 2014 award recipient in the Foundation for Rural Education and Development scholarship program.

The scholarship program – which distributes nearly $75,000 annually — provides funding opportunities for students in rural communities throughout the country. Stauffer received a $2,000 scholarship.

While at Stonewall Jackson, Stauffer was active in many school activitie, including the Student Council Association, Future Business Leaders of America and the Honor our Military Everyday club. He was captain of the Stonewall Jackson varsity football team and captain of the wrestling team. Outside of school, he has volunteered as a math tutor, and plays on the Shenandoah County Club Lacrosse Team. Stauffer is attending Virginia Tech in the fall with plans to study engineering.
