Newtown History Center unveils new plaques

The Newtown History Center of the Stone House Foundation held its third annual volunteers and members holiday open house on Dec. 6.

Activities included self-guided tours of the exhibits, holiday music, and a dedication of a plaque honoring the foundation’s benefactress, Mildred Lee Grove, who lived most of her life in Stephens City.  Additional new plaques were unveiled honoring individuals and organizations that have given monetary contributions to the foundation, according to a news release.

Byron Smith, the center’s executive director and curator, spoke about the foundation’s beginnings and current Stephens City preservation efforts, including the restoration of the Stone House located just south of the center on Main Street. Linda Simmons, board member and cousin of Grove, also spoke highlighting Grove’s lifetime of devotion to local history, education, philanthropy and community service.
