Partnership to offer free flu vouchers

The United Way of the Northern Shenandoah Valley has announced 1,000 free flu shot vouchers will be available to area residents through a partnership with Walgreens and FamilyWize Community Service Partnership.

The flu shot vouchers will be available to those who are uninsured or underinsured and otherwise unable to afford a voucher.

The flu can have a significant impact on the lives of Americans, especially those with lower incomes and those without enough insurance coverage, according to a news release from the United Way.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported parents spend between $300 to $4,000 in medical expenses and miss an estimated 11 to 73 hours of work when their children get the flu, the release stated.

Part of a nationwide program with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the vouchers are provided by Walgreens through the FamilyWize website, http://www.FamilyWize.org.

Vouchers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. Everyone visiting the site can get a free FamilyWize prescription savings card for savings of up to 75 percent off the cost of prescription medication. Prescription cards are also available at the United Way office at 329 N. Cameron St., Winchester.
