The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is expanding its main distribution center to include a produce cooler capable of storing 72,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables at any one time.
Based on the study “Hunger in America 2014” commissioned by Feeding America, 85 percent of households served by the food bank bought unhealthy cheap food as a coping strategy to get enough to eat. Over half of client households reported having a member with high blood pressure and one third reported having a member with diabetes.
According to Food Bank CEO Michael McKee, nearly half of the clients surveyed reported that someone in their home was in poor to fair health. Therefore, they are committed to doing their part to help clients improve their well-being with healthy, nutrient-dense fresh vegetables and fruit.
