This weekend, free events, festivals, and family togetherness sprout from the valley as springtime weather draws residents out of doors and into nature. The Of Ale and History Beer Fest in Middletown, the Wine and Trotter Festival in Woodstock, National Public Gardens Day events in Winchester, a Mother's Day weekend garden fair in Boyce, and the Battle of Front Royal Civil War Roundtable event will offer something for any taste.

WINCHESTER -- The parking garage will get a lot more personality this weekend. The normally dull rooftop of Court Square Autopark in Winchester will be transformed Saturday night for Salsafest, a celebration of food, music and dance to benefit local nonprofits.

MT. JACKSON -- Four bands will battle it out Saturday for a chance to open for bluegrass band Cherryholmes at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival this summer. Barrels, Barbecue & Bands will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at Cave Ridge Vineyard in Mt. Jackson, and will feature an afternoon of food, wine and music.

Winchester Festival princesses Five students have been named princesses in the court of the queen of the 83rd Apple Blossom Festival April 23-May 1. Representing Lord Fairfax Community College is Brittany N. Green, daughter of Sheila and Rickey Green of Mt. Jackson and granddaughter of Bonnie Proctor of Mt. Jackson, Betty and Bill Green of Quicksburg and Janet Lonas of Woodstock. A sophomore science major, she is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, vice president of fundraising and was homecoming queen. Representing Shenandoah University is Alexis M. Hargbol, daughter of Michele and Dana Hargbol of Manassas and granddaughter of Constance and Thomas Mitro of Richmond. A senior majoring in pharmacy, she is the 2009 homecoming queen and a member of the basketball team. Representing Massanutten Military Academy is Jonnie L. Herndon, daughter of Billie and Tom Herndon of Jacksonville, Fla., and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Herndon of Live Oak, Fla., and Emma Womack of Ohio. Representing the West Virginia Horticultural Society is Rachel K. Burkhart, daughter of Karen and Mark Burkhart of Martinsburg, W.Va., and granddaughter of Marcella Dodd of Amherst, Ohio, and Geneva Burkhart of Martinsburg. A freshman at West Virginia University, majoring in speech pathology, she is a graduate of Martinsburg High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club. She played varsity basketball and volleyball and was captain of both teams her senior year. Representing the Virginia Horticultural Society is Whitney P. Hylton, daughter of Robin and Paul Hylton of Leesburg and granddaughter of W. Eugene Larrick and Hamp and Judy Hylton, all of Winchester, is a junior at Bridgewater College. A biology major, she is a member of the Beta Beta Beta biological society and the Chemistry Club. She is a graduate of Loudoun County High School and a Red Cross volunteer. Anna L.
