Despite the haphazard method our children use to handle fragile and delicate objects, not nearly enough ornaments get broken each year to make a significant difference in the amount of work involved in putting away all the Christmas decorations.

Last week I traveled to Columbus, Ga., for seven events over two days. I was set to speak to Mormons, Methodists, college students and to a crowd of struggling teen girls at a Christian-based residential treatment center. My last stop would be a speech at the Junior League of Columbus.

Some of my students are questioning the logic of working. Why should they work when the cost of going to work can equal their monthly paychecks when you consider the cost of gas, insurance, repairs and the car it itself. Still, I tell them they must persevere as it is hard work and ethic that will take them through these rough economic times.

If you watched the BCS championship game last week between Alabama and Notre Dame, you may have caught an ESPN feature on the adoption of 14-year-old Sam Grewe of Middlebury, Ind., by the Notre Dame football program. And, if you saw it, you're more likely to remember his inspiring story than the game itself.

With all do respect for Pastor George Bowers, I take exception to his suggestion in the Jan. 5 Northern Virginia Daily column that "concepts such as mercy and grace were rare before he (Jesus) came."
