The ghost of Waveland makes nightly appearances

By Elizabeth Libby -- Daily Staff Writer

(Oct. 27, 1995) Every night for the past 28 years, after James and JoEllen Huey have turned in for the night, the ghost of Waveland makes his presence known. About 20 minutes after the Hueys get into bed, the H-clasp latch on their closet door releases and the door stands open. The phenomenon doesn't happen however, when Huey is away on business or during extremely bad weather, Mrs. Huey said.

The Hueys believe their ghost is the spirit of the home's original owner, Col. Martin R. Kaufman, who built the house near Stephens City in 130. Col. Kaufman, a member of the House of Burgesses, was reputed to be a ladies' man. Mrs. Huey believes the door opens after the family is safely tucked into bed and the colonel leaves to meet his lovely companion. He doesn't step out when her husband is away because "he would stay around and protect the property," she said.

When their children were in school, the Hueys often welcomed their classmates to the house for a history lesson. The story enthralled and the children, many of whom have returned with their own children to hear the tale, Mrs. Huey said.

The Hueys have repeated their bedtime routine during the day to see if the closet door would open, and altered it to see if they are doing something to make the door come open, but they've not been able to explain it. the family, however, has never been scared by the occurrence, Mrs. Huey said. "There's enough room in this house for the ghost and me."
