What dreams may come: Local couple discover passion for renovating old mill

FISHERS HILL — For no better reason than just because he is able to, the Rev. Bill Erbach refuses to stand pat. Whether it's fitting a two-bedroom apartment atop a mill for needy Shenandoah University students, lengthening a garage by a few feet or filling a train depot with his train collection, Erbach, 72, seems to always have something to do around his house and 42-acre property along Battlefield Road. His wife, Martha, shares the work ethic.

Homework habits: Choosing right time, place can make studying less stressful

This fall, dress your home for success — for students, that is. How well students do on their homework can depend on the atmosphere in which they study, say local professionals, so whatever edge parents can give their children will help. "If you have a student who can work independently, then being in a space that's prepared ... [will help the child] focus well enough," says Kim Riley, guidance counselor at Armel Elementary School in Frederick County. This space could be a desk in their bedroom, the kitchen table or dining room table, she says, as long as the area is free from distractions.

Quiet killer: Home radon tests can determine safety of air
WINCHESTER — A silent killer may be slipping through the cracks and into your home. Once inside, it gets into the air you breathe and begins its assault on your respiratory system. Anyone who owns a pool knows that it takes a lot to keep that cool, clean water staying that way. Blandy blossoms: Research farm offers community a new garden space

BOYCE — Blandy Experimental Farm, home to the State Arboretum of Virginia, is now a place where in addition to looking at plants, you can actually grow them. The brainchild of Steve Carroll, director of public programs at Blandy, the Blandy garden for the community is new this year. "We had the garden space that hadn't been used, at least not in a year or so," says Carroll. "I've always been interested in community gardening and providing food, not only for families, but also for food banks and so on. I'm interested in the whole local fresh food movement, that whole idea. I at least considered the possibility that there would be people or groups who don't already have garden space and might like to use it."
