Amazing Grace named 'Ultimate Horse Idol'

FRONT ROYAL — Steve Foster has the right name for his national champion mule: Steve's Amazing Grace. The 3-year-old mule recently won America's Ultimate Horse Idol competition at Richmond International Raceway. Grace qualified for the contest earlier in Raleigh, N.C.

New owner insists she bought a defective puppy

WINCHESTER — London is either one sick puppy, or his owner has spent thousands of dollars for unneeded tests. Kathleen Welsh bought the small, white Maltese, on Sept. 14 for $1,600 from the Puppy Cottage on Valley Pike near Winchester. Since then, said Welsh, who lives in Front Royal, she has maxed out credit cards to pay for veterinarian hospital care and several tests to find out what ails her dog.

New Humane Society board members named
FRONT ROYAL — The Humane Society of Warren County's new six-member board of directors is intent on getting the organization and the animal shelter it operates on the right track following removal of the previous board. After a heated recall meeting Thursday before a standing-room-only crowd at the Warren County Raymond E. Santmyers Youth Center, 55 members of the Humane Society cast the required two-thirds majority vote to oust the previous board.

Warren County animal shelter director resigns
FRONT ROYAL — Warren County's animal shelter is without a permanent director again. Tamara Zaluzney, 41, resigned from the position of director late last month in response to complications with her availability and other issues, said Doug Scott, president of the Humane Society of Warren County's board of directors.

Talks on shelter funding continue

FRONT ROYAL — The Board of Supervisors has given Warren County officials more time to reach an agreement over funding for the animal shelter. The supervisors extended the existing agreement until October so county officials can continue negotiations with the Humane Society of Warren County for a new three-year contract. The amount of funding for the shelter has been the main sticking point in the negotiations, county officials said.

FRONT ROYAL — The veterinary clinic at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Canine Training Center has earned accreditation through the American Animal Hospital Association for the fourth year in a row. Fancy furs: Cats put their best paws forward for judges at show

WINCHESTER — To look their best in front of the judges, show contestants traveled with brushes, hair dryers, mousse and make-up. They came in a variety of sizes and colors. Some had long hair, others had short hair. When not competing, they spent most of their time locked in cages, being spoon-fed baby food as a treat. The Cat Fanciers of Washington's 62nd annual Allbreed Cat Show was held Saturday and Sunday at the Sportsplex south of Winchester.

Ground broken for future Winchester dog hangout in Jim Barnett Park

WINCHESTER — Chewy and other area dogs soon can have their own hangout. And humans can come, too. Excavation has begun on the future Winchester Dog Park in the city's Jim Barnett Park which, once finished, will give canine lovers like Becky Oliver and Rebecca Miller a secure space to bring their pooches to play and socialize. "I know, for myself, we always come to Jim Barnett [Park] to walk our dogs on the trails and we thought we really needed a dog park and ... the closest one here is 50 miles away," Oliver said at a groundbreaking Wednesday morning as a bulldozer knocked down trees on the park site.

Strasburg police's new best friend sniffs out trouble

STRASBURG — As he alternately fetches and enthusiastically chomps a rubber toy during a sunny afternoon at the town park, it's easy to think of Ike as a typical playful pooch. But being man's best friend isn't Ike's day job — the 3-year-old German shepherd has a nose for narcotics and concealed humans, and is the newest addition to Strasburg's police force.

Officers try to work with pet owners to educate, not arrest

WINCHESTER — The horse's ribs looked like ripples poking up under its tan-and-white hide. But the animal's emaciated appearance likely came from illness and not from neglect or abuse, according to Deputy Megan Moreland, an animal control officer with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.
