Step up to the plate

Mike Smith is looking for a few good coaches, and he needs to find them fast.

Smith, an assistant principal at Sherando High School, is leading the effort to secure a coaching staff for the Post 53 Front Royal American Legion baseball program for the 2011 summer season.

If Post 53 doe not have a new staff in place soon, the program could be in jeopardy of going defunct. That would truly be a shame, as American Legion baseball provides a positive and rewarding outlet for teen-age players throughout the summer months. Post 53 included players from Warren, Frederick, Shenandoah and Clarke counties in the past and still draws extensively from the area high school programs. Post 53's baseball program won American Legion state championships in 1957 and 1963.

Smith is still accepting resumes for the coaching staff via email at post53baseball@hotmail.com by Jan. 1, 2011.
