Despite missing out on qualifying for the NCAA Division III softball tournament, the season will go on for a trio of former area softball standouts.
Nicole Musser (Sherando High School), Tara Fields (Clarke County) and Brianna Smith (Clarke County) have all played pivotal roles for Wilson College this season and have been a major factor in the team's 22-11 record.
The Phoenix will have a chance to improve upon that mark starting Wednesday in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Tournament. It will be Wilson's first-ever appearance in the ECAC tournament, and the Phoenix are slated to visit Stevenson University for the first round. Wilson dropped a pair of decisions -- 6-3 and 3-2 -- to Stevenson this season.
The Phoenix, who won the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division tournament, dropped a pair of games to North Division champion Keuka College this past weekend for the conference's overall championship and automatic NCAA tournament berth.
In the first game against Keuka, Musser fired two scoreless innings in relief to finish out a 4-1 loss. Musser gave up just one hit and struck out four. Fields went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in that game.
In the second game (a 5-3 loss), Musser fired a complete game. She allowed seven hits and five runs while fanning six. Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Wilson.
