Russell Road among stakes nominees
Longtime track favorite Russell Road is among the nominees to run in the $100,000 Wild & Wonderful Stakes at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, part of the June 30 Sprint Festival.
Russell Road, trained by former James Wood High School coach and athletic director James W. Casey and owned by Winchester's Mark Russell, has carved out a career as one of the top West Virginia-bred Thoroughbreds in history with lifetime earnings topping $1 million.
The 6-year-old gelding has enjoyed the vast majority of his racing success at Charles Town, including twice winning the West Virginia Breeders Classic, has notched 19 of his 20 career victories at the track. His last time out at Charles Town, in the Confucius Say Stakes for state-breds, Russell Road delivered a dominating 4 1/2-length victory over the seven-furlong test.
The Wild & Wonderful will also be run at seven furlongs, a distance Casey has said Russell Road is always comfortable running at Charles Town.
The fifth running of the Wild & Wonderful is part of a six-stakes race card worth nearly $750,000, topped by the $400,000 Red Legend Stakes.
Entries for the entire Sprint Festival program will be drawn on June 27.
