LURAY -- Circuit court judges in the 26th Judicial District have appointed John B. Thomas as Page County's sheriff until a special election is held in November.
Thomas is retired from the Virginia State Police and also worked as an investigator with the county, said Ron Wilson, clerk of Page County Circuit Court.
Thomas replaces Maj. Russell Montgomery, who was filling in as acting sheriff for Daniel W. "Danny" Presgraves, who resigned in February as he awaits a federal trial in September on 22 counts ranging from racketeering violations to lying to federal investigators.
