One trial sought for former sheriff

HARRISONBURG -- Federal prosecutors are asking a U.S. District Court judge to consolidate former Page County Sheriff Daniel W. "Danny" Presgraves' two indictments into one trial.
Presgraves is scheduled to go on trial Sept. 16 on a 22-count indictment handed down in October. Those counts include charges of racketeering, money laundering, cockfighting conspiracy and violating female subordinates' civil rights.
In June, Presgraves, who stepped down as sheriff in February, was indicted on a single count of lying to an FBI agent.
"Since there is only one defendant involved and both offenses pertain to the same act by that defendant, this is a proper case for consolidation," the government's motion says.
Presgraves remains free on bail.
