(2:20 p.m.) FRONT ROYAL -- A local woman found guilty in June of charges that she encouraged a fight between her daughter and another teenage girl will serve no jail time for the incident, a Warren County Circuit Court judge has ruled.
Betina Marie Roy, 35, of 142 Rugby St., appeared before Judge Dennis L. Hupp in Warren County Circuit Court for sentencing on Tuesday. Roy and her husband, David Onasis Roy, 39, were charged with felony and misdemeanor counts as a result of the Aug. 14, 2008, brawl, which was videotaped and later posted on the Internet.
After a two-day jury trial for the couple in June, David Roy was acquitted of felony child abuse and assault by mob charges he was indicted on in November. Betina Roy also was acquitted of an assault by mob charge. However, the jury found her guilty of assault and battery and felony child abuse charges.
On Monday, Hupp sentenced Betina Roy to 12 months in jail, all suspended, for the misdemeanor assault and battery charge. Meanwhile, the judge put the felony child abuse charge on deferred disposition. Roy also was placed on two years supervised probation.
