WINCHESTER -- Frederick County firefighters will be out in force to hold their 2009 Fill the Boot Drive later this month.
All proceeds collected through the fundraiser go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Firefighters will be at Millwood Pike and Costello Drive, Fairfax Pike and Double Church Road, Fox Drive and North Frederick Pike, and at the entrances to Shawneeland and Mountain Falls Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 22 and 23.
The drive is a joint effort by the Frederick County Professional Fire Fighters Association, the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Department and several volunteer fire companies in the locality. In 2008 Frederick County fell just short of collecting $10,000, according to the fire association's John Wright.
Firefighters remain the single biggest fundraisers for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They raised a record $27.5 million last year, and almost $350 million during the 54-year partnership.
Muscular Dystrophy consists of a group of hereditary muscle-destroying disorders which vary in pattern, from age of onset, to the initial muscles attacked, to the rate of progression. The disease affects more than 1 million Americans and there is currently no cure.
