FRONT ROYAL -- The local Rotary Club has honored the late Dr. James E. Williams with its first Robert E. Miller Community Service Award.
The Front Royal Rotary Club posthumously awarded Williams with the award at its meeting on Friday, public relations committee Chairman Douglas P. Stanley said. Williams, who died this year, was a member of the club since 1960 and served as club president from 1964 to 1965. He also worked as a dentist in the community from 1958 to 1996.
The Robert E. Miller Community Service award recognizes people whose contributions "improve the quality of life" of citizens in the community, according to a news release. Recipients must have demonstrated a dedication to the community through philanthropy or other types of civic service. Williams' wife, Shirley, sons, Michael and Chris, daughter, Elizabeth, son-in-law, Greg, and daughter-in-law, Sarah, accepted the award on his behalf.
