WINCHESTER -- An agreement reached between preservationists and the Winchester-Frederick County Sanitation Authority means a Civil War landmark has a new lease on life.
The service authority agreed at its meeting Monday morning to donate Millbank House -- a former Civil War hospital -- to the Fort Collier Civil War Center and other supporting organizations.
The property is west of the Opequon Water Reclamation Facility on Va. 7.
Millbank House was in danger of demolition after the service authority called the dilapidated building a safety liability. The preservation groups submitted a proposal to rehabilitate and maintain the property last month.
According to Bob Stieg, president of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Branch of Preservation Virginia, the property will be used for office and meeting space.
One acre of Third Winchester battlefield, covering Millbank House, will be turned over, according to a news release from the Civil War Center.
Joining the Civil War Center are Preservation Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, the Kernstown Battlefields Association and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
