WINCHESTER -- Roosters in crates marked "Warning-Great Killer" and other clues sparked a probe into a possible cockfighting ring, authorities said Friday.
Law enforcement officers seized one dead and several live roosters from the Winchester Budget Motel, 1350 N. Frederick Pike, on Thursday, according to a search warrant filed in Frederick County Circuit Court on Friday.
Authorities acted on a search warrant after a postal worker notified law enforcement about the post office in Winchester receiving roosters on several occasions since April. The roosters were being sent from Alabama to the motel and its manager, Timothy Jenkins.
Authorities have made no arrests in the investigation, Maj. Robert "Robbie" Eckman, of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, said Friday. The investigation is still in the early stages, Eckman said.
