WINCHESTER -- Repairs to a downtown church will prompt road closures beginning Tuesday, according to a city news release.
Waters Craftsman I Inc., of Huntly, plans to begin construction at the Centenary Reformed Church of Christ, 202 S. Cameron St., on Tuesday, the release states. Crews will close Cork Street between South Cameron and South Kent streets. Cork Street will be closed Tuesday-Friday. Cameron Street will be closed Aug. 23-27, according to the release.
The repair work on the church "requires access to the outer sections of the top of the tower to stabilize the parapet and eliminate the life safety hazard of falling brick and other debris," the release states.
Construction may disrupt travel in this area for drivers and pedestrians, officials warn in the release.
Cork Street must close in order for an 80-foot lift with an articulating arm to be put in place to make needed repairs to the church roof and steeple as well as to protect the public, according to the release. The lift must remain in the street because of the proximity of power lines and trees.
The company anticipates work to take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and, if necessary, Friday. Cork Street will reopen at other times of the day as well as all day Saturday and Sunday, the release states.
