More than a dozen Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles offices across the state will be open Sunday and Labor Day as the agency continues to play catch-up after motorists were unable to use its services due to a massive computer problem for much of the past week.
Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Thursday that extended hours would be offered both this weekend and Sept. 11-12, although Northern Shenandoah Valley residents who wish to take advantage of the service will have to visit offices in either Harrisonburg or Leesburg.
"It is imperative that we take every step necessary to assist Virginians inconvenienced by the recent computer issues that impacted 13 [percent] of the Commonwealth's file servers," McDonnell says in a news release.
All DMV locations, including those in Winchester, Front Royal and Woodstock, will be open until 6 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Fourteen locations, also including Charlottesville and Alexandria, will offer service until 6 p.m. Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to noon on Monday.
Those who have been unable to renew licenses have been given 20 additional days to do so.
