WOODSTOCK -- The National Association of State Boards of Education named Army Lt. Gen. Benjamin C. Freakley the policy leader of the year last month.

The award is given annually to someone who contributes to education, a news release states.

Freakley, the commanding general of the U.S. Army Accessions Command, has worked to cut dropout rates and improve secondary education, it states.

"He is a special kind of leader who sees and is acting upon the need for education and the military to unite in the service of America's youth to better ensure the national's future," the association's executive director, Brenda Welburn, says in the release.

Freakley is a Central High School graduate.
