Man remains in jail in 2008 killing

BERRYVILLE -- A Mexican man accused of murdering one person and trying to kill another in Clarke County in 2008 remains in jail without bond.
Jose M. Cuevas-Gonzalez, 56, of Jalisco, Mexico, appeared in Clarke County General District Court via video from the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center on Wednesday.
A grand jury indicted Cuevas-Gonzalez on single counts of possession of a gun by an illegal alien, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and first-degree murder. Authorities charged Cuevas-Gonzalez in the July 9, 2008, shooting death of Juan Francisco-Cortez, 22, of Charlotte, N.C.
Cuevas-Gonzalez also is charged with attempted murder in the shooting and wounding of Daniel Guerrero-Lopez.
Authorities found the defendant in Mexico in July.
Cuevas-Gonzalez is scheduled to make his first appearance on his circuit court charges on Monday.
