FRONT ROYAL -- A pedestrian struck by a vehicle Tuesday night in Warren County has died, according to state police.
James Alfred Oldfield, 59, was hit around 10:25 p.m. Tuesday while walking west on Fairground Road, according to state police spokesman Sgt. F.L. "Les" Tyler.
Oldfield was struck by a 2002 sedan that was traveling westbound, Tyler said. Joshua William Stanley, 27, of Martinsburg, W.Va., was the only person in the vehicle at the time, he said.
Oldfield's listed address was 478 Fairground Road, Tyler said.
Oldfield was taken to Winchester Medical Center and died from injuries at 12:40 a.m., Tyler said.
Further details were not yet available, but Tyler said alcohol was not involved.
"It is still under investigation as to the events that led up to the accident," Tyler said.
State Trooper P.M. Neff is investigating the incident.
The Warren County Sheriff's Office and local emergency and rescue services assisted at the scene, Tyler said

This is a tragic incident. I feel awful for this person and his family. However, I'm pretty sure Chevrolet doesn't make a car called an Avalon.
The newspaper and perhaps even the local police would do the community a service if the public were reminded that pedestrians should walk FACING ONCOMING TRAFFIC. This report indicates that the unfortunate gentleman was walking "with the traffic" and therefore had his back to the approaching vehicle. "Drive on the right, WALK on the left." I can't count the number of "near misses" I've had in over forty years of driving because people's backs were to me and I didn't see them until the last moment. My prayers go with this man's loved ones, especially at this time of year.
This is indeed a tragedy. The gentleman who died was a truly, genuinly nice man. Prayers to his family.
Also it was a chevy avalanche. Terrible for the driver also.
