Front Royal-Warren County facility is planning to build eight additional T-hangars

FRONT ROYAL -- The planned T-hangar expansion of the Front Royal-Warren County Airport is finally moving ahead as bids for the construction project are to be received this afternoon.
The bids will be received by 2 p.m. at for the pre-engineered, eight-unit T-hangar expansion.
The eight-hangar expansion will add to the capacity of 10 existing units, said Deputy Administrator Robert Childress. The eight T-hangars will be added to the end of the airport, located on Stokes Drive, and match in size, shape and form.
The added T-hangars will all accommodate privately owned, single-engine propellor airplanes, Childress said.
Planning, preparation and site work for the T-hangar expansion began two or three years ago, Childress said.
Construction had been put off temporarily until enough renters were secured for the proposed hangars, but the airport is now ready to move forward.
"We have already got commitments from plane owners once we get [the hangars] finished," Childress said. All of the secured and committed hangar renters are private-plane owners, Childress said.
Construction would begin 120 days from the time of the bid award, depending on final approval from the Board of Supervisors, Childress said.
The lowest received bid will be presented to the board by its second February meeting, Childress said.
No official estimate has been prepared for the cost, Childress said, but at least 18 contractors and firms had requested the bid information packets.
"For a project this size, we have had quite a bit of interest," Childress said. "Hopefully, that will equate to a good bid."
County officials had considered use of loans to help fund the project. Childress said the revenue generated by the hangar rentals also can be put to the project funding.
