BERRYVILLE -- A Pennsylvania man died after crashing his vehicle in Clarke County late Monday night.
Thomas E. Swartz, 65, of Mountainsville, was driving a 1997 Ford F150 pickup westbound on Va. 7, according to Sgt. F.L. Tyler, of the Virginia State Police. At 9:56 p.m. Swartz lost control of the vehicle, which then ran off the road to the right and struck a utility pole east of Va. 635, Tyler said Tuesday morning.
Emergency rescue workers responded and took Swartz to Winchester Medical Center where he later died of his injuries at 11:25 p.m., according to Tyler.
Swartz was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, Tyler said.
Sleet was falling and mixed with snow to cover the road, according to Tyler.
It was not known whether alcohol was involved, Tyler said, citing a report by the investigating Trooper J.F. Williams.
