* Afternoon forecast: Breezy, chance of thunderstorms

This afternoon's weather forecast calls for a breezy day with sunshine and a high of 80, but there is a chance that a cold front moving through the Mid-Atlantic states could bring scattered thunderstorms, some severe, to our area.

The National Weather Service's hazardous weather outlook says these storms could produce damaging winds and large hail, and heavy downpours could cause flash flooding.

Sunny on Thursday

Thursday looks more promising, with a mostly sunny forecast and a high of 65, but showers and thunderstorms are expected to return Thursday night (30 percent chance) and continue to drench the already rain-soaked ground with more rain through Sunday.

A good soaking on Friday

Flash flooding may be a reality on Friday, when moderate to heavy rainfall (90 percent chance during the day and 70 percent that evening) is predicted.

Friday's high will be 49, but temperatures will rise to 72 on Saturday, when there's a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms.

There's a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms on Sunday, and a high of 77.

Tornadoes confirmed

The Associated Press reports that 10 tornadoes were confirmed in Virginia on Saturday.

The most powerful was a storm packing 136-165 miles that hit Gloucester County and parts of Surry and Mathews counties. Other tornadoes went through Augusta, Dinwiddie, Halifax, Isle of Wight, Loudoun, Middlesex and Rockbridge counties.

The state has confirmed that there were five storm-related fatalities.

Weather-related tax relief
Gov. Bob McDonnell on Tuesday announced that taxpayers in counties affected by storms on Saturday and April 8 will receive a 30-day extension to file and pay Virginia tax returns.
