*Frederick man will serve prison time for shaking infant

WINCHESTER -- A Frederick County man must serve prison time for shaking and injuring his infant in 2009.

Steven J. Goode Jr., 24, pleaded no contest in Frederick County Circuit Court on Thursday to committing unlawful wounding and child abuse resulting in serious injury Nov. 10, 2009.

Retired Judge Ben Kendrick accepted Goode's pleas and sentenced him to 15 years with 12 years suspended.

Authorities charged Goode with aggravated malicious wounding, a conviction of which carries a maximum term of life in prison.

The agreement called for Goode to enter a plea to the reduced charge of unlawful wounding and child abuse.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Dennis McLoughlin said the child, then about 2 months old, suffered hemorrhages in his brain and eyes indicative of child abuse through shaking a baby.

The baby now does not appear to suffer any long-term effects, according to the prosecutor and his attorney, William A. "Beau" Bassler. The child currently resides with his maternal grandmother, McLoughlin said.
