HARRISONBURG -- Prominent Winchester defense attorney Paul Hampton Thomson remains a free man.
U.S. Magistrate Judge James G. Welsh denied a government motion to revoke Thomson's bond on Monday. He was indicted in January on drug, conspiracy and tampering charges.
The U.S. Attorney's Office alleged that the 56-year-old Thomson, a former commonwealth's attorney for Winchester, violated his $50,000 bail by privately meeting with a state court client who is also a witness against him in U.S. Districtd Court, and by telling that client's mother and sister to not cooperate with federal investigators.
Welsh said the government failed to meet its burden of proof.
