SU unveils new signature brand
WINCHESTER -- Shenandoah University officials unveiled the college's new signature as part of an effort to "live the brand."
President Tracy Fitzsimmons spoke about the university's logo and wordmark and explained what it means to "live the brand" at a press conference on the campus Thursday.
Groups of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff during the 2009-2010 academic year sat in on multiple discussions with the branding agency, Educational Marketing Group, about what the university is and isn't, according to a press release. Input from the meetings went into the development of the brand and graphic identity, the release states.
Shenandoah's history and "picturesque" location inspired the logo. The crest, a traditional symbol of academic quality and strength, recalls the stained-glass windows in the United Methodist Church in Dayton. The design within the crest depicts the mountains and rivers of the university's home in the Shenandoah Valley. The stars in the evening sky come from the Native American meaning of the Shenandoah - "Daughter of the Stars" -- and represent the two places the university has occupied during its 135-year history, originally in Dayton and now Winchester. The year below the horizon reflects the university's founding date.
