Charity event to delay area traffic

Recommend ThisWINCHESTER -- Motorists can expect delays as a motorcycle group travels through Frederick County late Monday morning, authorities warn.
Participants in the Kyle Petty Charity Ride plan to enter Virginia from West Virginia via Northwestern Pike (U.S. 50) at approximately 11 a.m., according to Lt. Mike Richardson, traffic safety coordinator with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Richardson said Thursday he expects close to 400 motorcyclists in the ride.
County deputies will escort riders east on Northwestern Pike to the 7-Eleven at Botanical Boulevard for a fuel stop scheduled at approximately 11:15 a.m., Richardson said. After the stop, riders plan to travel to Grove's Harley-Davidson, 100 Independence Drive, off Millwood Pike (U.S. 50).
Deputies will close Northwestern Pike eastbound from the 7-Eleven to the Va. 37 interchange and the northbound ramp, Richardson said. Motorcyclists will take Va. 37 north to the U.S. 11 interchange, then travel I-81 south to Exit 313, then head east on Millwood Pike to the dealership, according to Richardson.
The group then plans to take Millwood Pike through Clarke County to U.S. 17 and Interstate 66.
The charity ride begins Saturday in Lake Placid, N.Y., and is scheduled to end May 13 at Amelia Island, Fla. Participants will travel from Farmington, Pa., to Irvington on Monday.
