*Meeting slated June 1 on Star Tannery post office

By Preston Knight -- pknight@nvdaily.com

STAR TANNERY -- Residents are being asked to come together in an effort to save their local post office.

A meeting is scheduled for June 1 at 7 p.m. at the Star Tannery Volunteer Fire Department for residents concerned about the U.S. Postal Service's plan to close the facility. Petitions will be available to sign and general information on what people can do to be heard will be provided, said Bob Engle, who is taking a lead role in publicizing the event. He retired to Star Tannery in 2005.

"These small, rural communities need to maintain an identity," Engle said. "They bring value and they have a historical significance. They're just getting pushed aside by all this consolidation and everything across the country."
