WINCHESTER -- Authorities have identified the victim in a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred Monday night in Frederick County.
Shawn Patrick Greenwood, 39, of Manassas died as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash on U.S. 17-50 shortly after 11:20 p.m., according to state police spokesman Sgt. F.L. Tyler.
The westbound 1999 Volkswagen Beetle driven by Greenwood ran off the road to the left, Tyler said. The driver tried to steer back on the road, overcorrected and veered to the right. The car left the road to the right, ran up an embankment and struck a tree near Sulphur Springs Road, according to Tyler. The car then rolled over.
The driver was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, Tyler said. Whether alcohol played a factor in the crash has not been determined, according to Tyler. The crash remains under investigation.
Greenwood's death marks the eighth fatality on Frederick County roads this year, and is equal to the number recorded for the locality for all of 2010, according to statistics collected by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
