EDINBURG -- The former Johns Manville manufacturing plant is going to auction Aug. 16.
Two adjacent tracts, totaling about 140 acres, at 182 Johns Manville Road on the west side of U.S. 11 between Edinburg and Woodstock, are being sold because of a default on a credit line deed of trust, according to an announcement for the auction.
The parcels will first be offered for sale separately, and then as a whole, it says.
According to the announcement, the winning bidder must pay a $100,000 deposit at the time of the sale, and a total deposit of 10 percent within three days, followed by the balance within 30 days.
Johns Mansville, which made commercial roofing systems, insulation and accessories, shut down in fall 2007 after 30 years of production at the site. The company is based in Denver.
A deed of trust on file in the Shenandoah County Courthouse was signed July 8, 2009, by Kevin E. Moyer and Barbara H. Moyer, acting as power of attorney for Allen T. Moyer. Farmers & Merchants Bank was the holder of the $2.5 million note, which was to be used to buy the property, according to the deed.
It lists Kevin Moyer as president of Valley Wood Products Inc. Also listed a grantors on the deed of trust are Heritage Land Investments LLC and Edinburg Investments LLC.
The Johns Manville property was deeded to Edinburg Investments July 7, 2009. A handwritten note at the top of the deed says it was for $2.5 million, but lists an assessment of $9.4 million.
Valley Wood Products' website, valleywoodproductsva.com, says the company was "very busy with getting everything set up" and would advise when it was ready to hire workers.
It says the company makes sawdust for animal bedding, and hoped to branch out into wood pellets and shavings.
"The expansion efforts will be completed in 2010," the website says.
It says owner and president Kevin Moyer had run the business out of his Luray facility for about 10 years.
Efforts to reach him Wednesday were unsuccessful.
