FRONT ROYAL -- A Warren County man faces up to 50 years in prison after being charged with breaking and entering and malicious wounding with a caustic substance, mace.

Michael Shane Kidwell, 35, of 1186 Poor House Road, Front Royal, has been charged with breaking and entering in the daytime with the intent to commit larceny or assault and with malicious wounding of Tamara Dawn Walton by means of acid, lye or a caustic substance or agent.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Wednesday in Warren County General District Court, but was continued to 1:30 p.m. July 28.

Kidwell is represented by court-appointed attorney D. Eric Wiseley of Strasburg. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Bryan C. Layton.
Substitute Judge James A. Allamong is presiding over the case. Allamong explained to Kidwell that regular General District Court Judge W. Dale Houff cannot hear the case because Kidwell's mother is an employee of Warren County General District Court.
Kidwell's mother is Pam Kidwell, clerk of the court.

Kidwell is being held in the Warren County Jail pending the July 28 preliminary hearing in lieu of posting $50,000 secured bond.

Layton said following Wednesday's proceeding that the breaking and entering charge against Kidwell carries a range of punishment of one to 20 years in prison and the range of punishment on the malicious wounding charge by caustic substance carries a range of punishment of five to 30 years in prison.

In a complaint form on file in General District Court, Front Royal patrol officer A.C. Mariano says he responded to 219 Cloud St., Apt. G, on May 29 after an assault was reported.

Mariano says he came into contact with Tamara Dawn Walton, "who informed me her ex-boyfriend, identified as Michael Shane Kidwell, entered her residence while she was asleep."

Mariano goes on to say that, "Tamara informed me that Michael then jumped on her while she was in bed and sprayed her in the face with mace. Michael then began choking her and threatening to kill her and then himself. Tamara had redness in her face and on her neck as well as cuts on her neck. Michael fled the scene before my arrival."
