HARRISONBURG -- A former postman from Strasburg accused of stealing mail from residents on his Winchester route has been released on bond, according to online court records.
U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge James G. Welsh released Jason McKinley Dean, 31, of 357 Brown St., on a $10,000 bond Monday, according to court records.
Dean was indicted last month on one count of stealing mail and one count of destroying mail. He pleaded not guilty to those charges on Monday, court records say.
A trial has been set for Sept. 1.
Dean came under investigation after U.S. Postal Service customers complained they were missing greeting cards that had gift cards, checks and cash inside, an affidavit filed in federal court says.
Hundreds of pieces of mail were found in Dean's garbage, it says.
