FRONT ROYAL -- Warren County is participating in a discount program for prescription medications.
The program will be available to all county residents who do not have prescription insurance coverage. There are no income or age requirements associated with the discount.
Prices will vary between pharmacies, and will be based on the retail prices of the prescriptions, but on average, participants will save 24 percent on regularly prescribed medications.
The discount program is not insurance and is different from it in that participants do not have to fill out claims forms or pay an annual fee. The service is free and provided by the county.
"Although Virginia's Medicaid programs cover most low-income children, there are many elderly and disabled adults in Warren County who cannot afford their medicines and are not eligible for Medicaid. These folks often have to choose between paying their basic living expenses and buying their medicines," said County Administrator Douglas P. Stanley. "Because this is available to all citizens regardless of age and income, this program helps families and single people who are normally not served by the department, citizens who need just a little help to make ends meet."
County residents who do have insurance can potentially benefit from the program as well if they find a particular discounted medication that is not covered by their plan.
In order to take advantage of the program, customers can print out discount cards online at www.caremark.com/naco, or pick them up at the Warren County Government Center, SAAA and the Warren County Community Center.
Only one card is needed per family because multiple family members can use the same card, and there is no limit to how often the card can be used. Some pet medications may be covered as well, if it is a prescription that is also used to treat human conditions.
There are more than 60,000 pharmacies participating in this program nationwide, eight of which are in Warren County: Family Pharmacy, CVS, Rite Aid, Kmart, Lester and Mowery's Pharmacy, Martin's, Target and Wal-Mart.
