FORT VALLEY -- A pair of Warren County volunteer agencies assisted the Fort Valley Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday night in an attempt to rescue a dog on the Signal Knob Trail in the George Washington Forest.
The dog, a border collie/Pyreneese mix, was recovered around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and had lost numerous paw pads as a result of being taken on a hike that was too strenuous for her, Fire Chief Preston Stempler said.
"Imagine having all the skin on your feet removed and trying to walk," he said.
The dog, after hiking about 10 miles Tuesday, had refused to go any farther, and its owner and other hikers were unsuccessful in getting her up, Stempler said. They called for help, and two Warren County agencies, Front Royal and Fortsmouth, assisted Fort Valley before being removed from the scene because of darkness Tuesday.
Stempler and two others returned Wednesday morning and found the dog where her owner had left her. The Signal Knob Trail is one of the most "robust" ones in Shenandoah County, with 50 percent of it on rock, he said.
"I do a lot of mountain biking with my dogs," Stempler said. "It's like humans, if they're not in shape, they're not ready for it. ... [The hikers] figured a dog could do anything."
